Angela’s new partner

Hollande is a French socialist with a classic state spend, spend mentality to solve all economic problems. Merkel wants debt reductions, and structural reforms to make the eurozone more competitive. Its a recipe for conflict between the two politicians and for the euro.

Slouching towards the drachma

I think everything as been said many times over concerning Greece, the politicians are incompetent and the country is virtually bankrupt. The clock is ticking and now it is only a matter of time before Greece leaves the euro, or is thrown out of the euro.
But Greeks are deluding themselves if they think the old Drachma will be any better.

Groping towards Grexit

Its unbelievable, newly elected Greek politicians are failing there people. Bickering and not compromising, while Greece slides down in a political swamp. Why the answer is OK lets have another election; do people really think the outcome will be much different, just more political in fighting, mean while the eurozone is considering pulling the plug of Greece loans, and Greece with be forced to leave the eurozone.

Add Hollandaise sauce

I just don't think certain countries will swallow there economic medicine. They will promise the earth to keep Brussels happy, but when it comes to actually doing things they will fudge and foot drag; the Med countries are master at this art. Will Hollande really reign in France's famous addiction to big public spending, I think not, instead there will be alot of smiling photo ops with Merkel and Barroso, and many vague promises, its what the EU does best.

A rude awakening

The Spanish banks have only just realized there is only so much dirt can be swept under the carpets, and kept out of sight. Sooner or later some one have to tackle Spains deep seated banking problems. Investors will be only more nervous about investing in Spanish finance.

Now for the hard part

He will do what all French socialist Presidents do after getting elected, go on a spending spree employing ever more govt workers, teachers etc, raise already high taxes even higher. The wonderful French state shall provide for all?

The last time the people had any democratic say on membership of the EU was way back in 1970's. A long over due referendum is badly needed. Politicians both Labour and Tory have been dodging this question for decades, and this is the reason why people have grown tired and impatient and turned to UKIP to force the issue, and let there democratic voices be heard at long last.
Question is will it just turn into a Ireland type referendum fudge, vote NO and the UK still stay's in the EU?

The man of the moment

Hollande will no doubt go on a public spending spree if he gets elected. Hire more govt workers, teachers, academic's etc. Do a typical French trick of trying to spend your way out of your problems.; Merkel knows this, as it will not work.

Call it a depression

Call it depression, recession, truth is the eurozone economy is going down the crapper, pulled down by the southern EU economies who for years just thought that they could get a free ride on the back of the euro without reforming there state controlled economies.

The man of the moment

Ah thats the true French spirit - Fraternity, Liberty, and Bankruptcy. Man the barricades, its those evil Anglo Saxon capitalists plodding against France. The French will never be satisfied , that is there cultural curse. A 20 hour week, and half the year in holidays, but who cares who pays for the pensions when you retire at 40. The wonderful French state shall provide for us all?
If Hollande is elected and he goes on a public sector spending binge as an feeble excuse for growth, there will be serious friction between Paris and Berlin, that is for sure.

Kicking against austerity

I think Van Rompuy, Barroso, and Ashton are living on another planet. The EU elite talk like there is nothing to worry about, mean while Europe is in turmoil. I think if Hollande gets elected there will be serious friction and disagreement with Merkel over structural reforms.

The French look upon reforms as a dirty word towards there cherished big public sector. I am surprised that the Dutch are falling apart, as they seemed to embrace belt tightening measures and austerity, but obviously all is not what it seems?

Leader of the axis of growth?

A socialist advocating more government spending to conjure up a magicians trick of pulling a white rabbit out of the hat and calling it growth. Hollande is deluded, and it elected will be at loggerheads constantly with Merkel on austerity, and structural reforms.
France just as to take its economic medicine like the rest of debt Europe, its that simple. Hollande just wants to do the old French trick of spending your way out of national structural problems

Is The Economist anti-France?

I think that French are alittle too sensitive to open criticism, and yes TE is abit cut and thrust in its opinions, but who wants to read a boring article. Also what of all the so called complaining of the 'Anglo Saxon' model that the French love to kick and complain about.

The rather dangerous Monsieur Hollande

Surprise, surprise, a socialist advocating more government spending to conjure up a magicians trick of pulling a white rabbit out of the hat and calling it growth. Hollande is deluded, and it elected will be at loggerheads constantly with Merkel on austerity, and structural reforms.
France just as to take its economic medicine like the rest of debt Europe, its that simple.

Mobile moans

Movement and employment across the eurozone, how about just trying to transfer your car registration from 1 country to another, its a bureaucratic maze that takes months on end to process. Brussels eurocrats are living in a dreamland.

The rather dangerous Monsieur Hollande

Be careful what you wish for? maybe Hollande is what the French really need to give them shock therapy, because with his high tax agenda, and even more govt spending on France's already over weight public sector, the French economy will finally implode.
Don't expect Merkel and the Germans to ride to the rescue if Paris goes bankrupt under a socialist president.

Hazards, moral and otherwise

Greece dragged his heels constantly over economic reforms, and the ECB and IMF have now grown wise to false targets and declarations of austerity intent. Much more EU scrutiny is being applied. Spain, Portugal, and Italy have to deliver real reforms to there entrenched and protected economies?

The Mélenchon conundrum

Maybe one day the French electorate will get what they have been secretly fantasizing about for decades, a fully fledged communist state. Be careful what you wish for, one day it may come true?
