The solution is "simple" Legalize drugs, control them and tax them.... Colombia has been at war for over 40 years, then it went to mexico, now central america... its clear that the current methods used by the USA (just give them money and see what happens)are not working, and that the so-called war on drugs was lost decades ago. You cant stop the demand for these drugs and therefore they will always be a supply (similar to what happened during the prohibition in the US)... America needs to put its ego aside, admit they lost this war on drugs, and legalize them! Its the only way that these poor countries will be able to survive and even make a lot of money legally cultivating Coca (similar to tabacco growing, which btw kills more people a year then drugs)
@NIEL FEIRTEL: I would recomend you read up a bit before giving your opinion... It was Ingrids fault that she was kidnapped. She was told by the Colombian government not to go into the area, yet her ambition to try and become president overtook her common sense and SHE decided to go straight into the most dangerous area in Colombia to try and convince the guerrilla (Villians, Drug Cartels) to lay down their weapons, and obviously what happened? She got kiddnapped... if anyone should be suing, it should be the Government suing her for all the cost and time that was spent trying to rescue this stupid/selfish/crazy politician. I HOPE SHE STAYS IN FRANCE, BECAUSE NO COLOMBIAN WANTS HER HERE!!!
AND DO BUY THIS LADIES BOOK, SHES A LIAR AND A POS (PIECE OF SHHHH)
Sebas2R and The one and only... you guys and the author of this article have absolutely no idea whta youre talking about. I hope to the almighty that niether of you live in colombia
Dcardo... please change nickname to d-scaro! Clearly you are one of the many colombian with a short memory span... granted uribe has had his mistakes, but thats human... he has also changed the country in to a much safer, more comercial country... were kidnappings no longer happen, bombs no longer explode all over the cities, and a-holes like you can jolly around screaming brutalities like the blog you just wrote.. you done like Uribe or Santos, MOVVVVEEEEE PLEASE
After veiwing all these comments, I believe the Economist should redit this story! This is ridiculous... I mean how is this more importante then saying that Chavez denies Colombian evidence of FARC presence in the region. Obsurd
for the fisrt time in many years I have to say I completely disagree with the Economist view. Sure, Uribe is disrupting relations, however they have have been completely demolished for the past year. Uribe made the statements now so that Santos wouldnt have too! Clearly it is essential to show evidence of FARC presence in Venezuela, and who better to do it then Uribe, who already doesnt get along with Chavez and who after August 7 will be no longer in power. If Uribe hadnt done it, SAntos would of had too.. I think this article is completely misleading, and hints to the reader that Uribe is a power hungry individual who doesnt care about colombia but himself... and I would have to be 100% against that statement, and I assure you that 75% of colombians would say the same. I might have been AGAINST his 2nd reeleccion but I still believe he changed colombia (a once close to being failed state) into one of the comercial meccas of Latina America
@lev.D : clearly you had a horrible childhood and for that I apologize. Whoever mistreated you should be put in jail.... but please my friend stay in venezuela or go live in North Korea, because the world doesnt need more hatemongers or resented people.... we have enough of those
The author of this article is wrong in two points, 1)Even though Colombias foreign relations with Venezuela are at its worst affecting the Colombian economy and its entreprenuers, and no matter what advances have been done to reestablish these relations, the Colombian people can not afford to "suck up" to a mad man like Chavez. We cannot eat out of this guys hand! If there is evidence of terrorists harbored within Venezuela then the world should know! Like other fellow bloggers have stated, Uribe simply took all the heat! 2) Uribe and Santos might have thier conflicts with each other, but I assure you that they will work together to help benefit the Colombian people no matter that the diferences are...
Venezuelans wake up, join the Colombian revolution! And bring down the ape that is Chavez before he destroys everything your beautiful country has to offer!
Carmenere... completely understandable comment but freedom and democracy dont come by themselves and if the venezuelan people dont wake up and fight (whether it be in arms or with politics) venezuela will become a failed state, and the country that so many used to love will become nothing more then a country club for corrupt politicions and other criminals alike
This guy has lost his mind. Venezuelans need to rise up and stop this madman from turning the once so-called comercial mecca of latin america, into a crime infested country... where crimanals go to retire! Wake up and standup from this power hungry POS.. btw if anyone is wondering my nickname is Chavez´s blackberry pin if anyone cares to add him ;-)
This lady has lost her mind.. I remember the day she decided to go to the Caguan, everyone told her not to go, including the government. The reason she did not have bodyguards when se entered the MOST DANGEROUS area of Colombia at that time was because it was a suicide mission... and I assure you that her bodyguards (military men working to help Colombia out, whom OUR taxes pay for their salaries) would have all been shot to death in an attempt to kidnap the ungrateful bi** that is Ms. Betancourt.
She not only got herself kidnapped, she put the country in a 6 year stalemate because now the guerrillas had a muuuch bigger bargianing chip.
In all honesty, even if she withdraws her lawsuit I still believe the Colombian government should charge her for all the hefty expenses that were made for her rescue. I remember a case of a German lady that got kidnapped in Colombia after being warned not to go into the jungle, the German government charged her for any expenses incurred during her rescue! Colombia hsould do the same.
AND TO ALL OF YOU DONT BY THIS LADIES BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!
"Many imagined he had sped away in a high-powered boat, perhaps to Venezuela, in the manner of a movie drug baron" Venezuela is turning into a scapecoat for criminals and terrorists and STILL the internacional community does nothing about it!!!
To all Uribe haters.... I do agree that Colombia is faaarrr from being a perfect country, and I also agree that uribe has made his mistakes. However i dont agree with some of the statement saying that Colombia is worst of now then it was before Uribe. The bloggers who mention this prior statement clearly are not Colombians or have never lived in Colombia. 9 years ago the entire country lived in fear of death and kidnappings, threat of bombs was a part of everyday life... Now a days our concerns during these recent elections were the economy and the health system, how could ANYONE argue that Uribe hasnt changed the country for the better (and if you dont believe me go to the farmers and countrymen and tell them that, and assure you they will slap you for speaking such ridiculous "blasphemy"
Suma sin Laude: You say: "And just because the majority wanted to bury their head in the sand does not mean it was a good decision or that it was not a sad day for Colombia and Latin America." Dont insult the 69% of the Colombian people that voted for Santos, what your statement says is that all the Colombians that voted for Santos are ignorant and stupid (i did not vot for Santos btw). A statement that quite honestly is completely proposterous. During these elections the amount of debates and information that was given to the Colombian people about the candidates was massive. Furthermore, no Colombian "claims not knowing who Santos was" as you also so blindly mention. The false positives have existed for decades my friend they just happened to come to public light recently..... and Santos has actually done a good job a attempting to prevent them from happening again.
Grita Fuego, Mockus is a very honest person, whom I respect and admire. However 1) he was not ready to be president, 3 month before the elections he didnt even know he was goingto be president 2) Two of the people that surround him Garzon and Peñaloza have stolen a lot of money from the government... and if you dont believe me go to eltiempo.com and read Mr. Petro´s statements on Garzon 3) Sometimes the ends do justify the means... take for example the rescue of ingrid Betancourt or the death of Raul Reyes... two acccions that are condemed by internacional organizations but that were KEY to this war! 4) Life isnt all roses, and especially politics, Mockus would have been a horrible option for Colombia and thats why he went from having 38% of the votes to barely getting to 22% in the first round, the people realized he was not ready to become president
Me: You argue that the attack on Ecuador and Operacion jaque were mistakes? Im guessing youre not Colombian, because those to actions were 100% necesary. I recomend you go critizes Chaves, Correa, Morales, and other presidents that trully have jepordized Latin America
The USA should stop buying oil from Venezuela for 6-12 months and I assure you that Chavez will be kicked out of caracas very quickly. Unfortunetly One hears most americans talk bad about Chavez and his supposed socialist revolution but when it comes down to it they are Venezuelas # 1 trading partner. Furthermore Americans continue tanking thier cars at venezuelan owned gas stations and the American companies continue to help refine its oil!!! If the USA really wants to help the Venezuelan people they could of done it a looooonnnggg time ago... but that is yet to be seen. untill it directly affects the american people (which it probably wont) they wont do, pardon my french, shhh..ii.tt This is what generates so much animosity and hate towards the US in Latin America. As much as i love america, I can tell you that they are part of the reason why Chavez is in the powerful position he is in today . Quit the hipocrasy and use the power that the USA has for good rather then for convinience
Oliver Stone, Jesse Ventura, and all those other TV personalities should read and learn before speaking! it is extremely ridiculous that they support the orangutan that is Chavez!
The solution is "simple" Legalize drugs, control them and tax them.... What a coincidence.... Venezuela and its posse of uncapable sovereignty (ecuador, bolivia, argentina) will be the downfall of latin america.
@DALEPUES -- lea un poco!!!! Que claramente ud no sabe mucho sobre el tema
PARDON ME, I MEAN DONT BUY THIS BOOK
