Although I applaud Mr. Cooley's stance on three-strikes, which is indeed a draconian tool, I am fully committed to voting for Kamala Harris for AG. It takes more than simply recognizing that three-strikes doesn't work to be smart on crime. Kamala has proven that she is "smart" on crime rather than "tough" on crime. She has established policies and programs that actually use evidence rather than ideology, gut, or habit to combat crimes. In fact, one of her reentry programs has become both a statewide and national model. She also created a program to help victims of human trafficking and to treat them as victims rather than criminals and she created a very promising program to combat truancy, which has already been established as having a direct link to delinquency, which leads to adult crime.
In my opinion, as long as three-strikes and other backward and primitive laws remain on the books, our current crime problems AND budget problems will continue. I would love for someone to have the courage to fight to repeal it, but I'm afraid that ideology and the game of politics simply gets in the way. The problem really extends to the direct democracy that we so cherish here in CA and that will ultimately ruin our great state. When we allow uneducated masses to make the laws, can we expect anything else?
