The Awami League holds a commanding parliamentary majority and can legislate at will. The opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party won’t even occupy its seats, but will take to the streets to oppose changes that have a whiff of dynasty-building. Fence-mending with India will continue, boosting trade and exploiting Bangladesh’s status as a corridor between India’s heartland and its eastern reaches. The budget gap will be stretched to fund supply-side reforms.
