I'm not sure what media companies have attempted to do to compete with apple, amazon, or netflix, unless you mean trying to destroy the internet as we know it. The music and movie industries are dominated by technologically illiterate, rent-seeking oligopolies. This is a huge obstacle to improving the consumer experience.
