Whilst there will certainly be nostalgia involved in buying South African art, the point is being missed that there are good quality South African artists who are only now being appreciated on the international art markets.
Irma Stern is leading the way for the South African artists, whose painting are achieving record prices, both in South Africa and in London.
Like the rest of the world it is the secondary art market in South Africa that is taking strain with fewer buyers and resellers in the market at present.
However, I doubt that prices of the South African masters will pull back once a nolstalgia trip has come to an end as suggested in the article. For another viewpoint on the South African art market visit http://babobski.wordpress.com/
